One of my favorite restaurants is definitely Wee Nam Kee. When Wee Nam Kee Glorietta was still open (boo it closed recently!), I would go there a lot for solitary lunches. I would order my favorite Wee Nam Kee Personal Set and just have a nice, quiet, and satisfying lunch all by myself. One such day I went and found Wee Nam Kee Glorietta closed. I didn’t know where to eat. I walked around like a zombie until I settled for some random burger joint. Not a good day for me. lol.
Anyhow, the closest Wee Nam Kee branch to me is actually the one in Greenhills Promenade, so that was where we went to when we were invited to try Wee Nam Kee’s latest offerings. I scheduled it on a Sunday, in time for our helper’s day off. So yeah, it was a family lunch.
First dish we tried was the Bak Kut Teh (P320), a classic Singaporean soup consisting of pork ribs, mushrooms, tofu, and garlic all simmered in a deeply flavorful broth. My dad loved Bak Kut Teh. Whenever we would vacation in Singapore, we always had to have a meal or two devoted to Bak Kut Teh specialty places. Wee Nam Kee’s Bak Kut Teh is peppery yet smooth and really quite comforting. I liked it! It’s how Bak Kut Teh’s supposed to be done.
Next up was Singaporean Beef Noodles (P225). Tender seasoned beef brisket chunks, straw mushrooms, and Taiwan pechay top a bed of boiled Hong Kong noodles. This is served with soup on the side. The beef pieces are really soft, juicy, and tasty. This is best eaten with the piping hot soup.
Claypot Chicken Rice (P240) consists of boneless chicken chunks are sauteed with Chinese chorizo, black mushroom, leeks, and ginger then baked in a clay pot on top of rice. This is a nice and flavorful meal-in-itself dish that has everything you need for a balanced diet — meat, veggies, and rice.
Stewed Pork Belly with Steamed Buns (P365) isn’t a new dish. The 4th new dish was Beef Rendang but none of us felt like having it so I ordered this instead.
I kind of regret ordering this. For starters, it’s not very balanced. There are only 3 little pieces of soft steamed bread — look at how much meat you’re getting! Another thing I didn’t like about was the near absence of lean meat. The pork belly was almost all fat and no lean meat. Not good. I will most likely not order this again.
After all the new menu additions, my favorite is still the Roasted Hainanese Chicken. I always order it with my personal set. For more of their other dishes, you can check out my earlier post. I did enjoy the Bak Kut Teh though so it’s something I’ll probably order again next time.
