Starbucks Philippines is ushering in 2014 with a selection of healthy food choices that will be available all year round starting January 9, 2014.
The first thing that got my attention was the Veggie Sticks with Blue Cheese Dressing (P110, pictured above). One whole order is just 135 calories. I was so excited about this it was the first thing I started eating last night during the preview.
It’s packed like this, just like how Starbucks’ Fruit Cup is packed. A serving is comprised of crisp carrot, celery, cucumber, and jicama (turnip) sticks. I super love this. In fact whenever we order Buffalo Wings at restaurants I always end up eating the accompanying vegetable sticks instead of the chicken, lol!
Then there’s Starbucks Perfect Oatmeal (P85, pictured above). They have this in the US, I’m so glad we have it here in the Philippines now! This is actually DIY, what you see above is the finished product. When you purchase this, you will find 3 packets inside the container: oats, dried fruit, and organic agave syrup. There are instructions on the lid and it’s really easy to follow. Just steep in hot water for 3 mins. then add the syrup and toppings. If you want to eat it in the store the barista will prepare it for you. It’s good and it’s only 160 calories per serving! Hubby and I liked it a lot.
If you’re still the sandwich type, the newest sandwich on the menu is Grilled Ham and Three Cheese on Italian Country Bread (P170, pictured above). It’s basically a rich and sinful grilled cheese sandwich which is filled with melted Mozzarella, Emmenthal, and Cheddar cheeses plus ham. It’s seasoned with herb butter too. Definitely not diet fare if you’re trying to lose weight but delicious nonetheless I was able to finish a whole sandwich all too easily hahaha.
Starbucks has also come up with two new snack boxes. First is Couscous Salad, Smoked Tuna Spread, and Bagel Chips (P150, pictured above). I would describe the couscous as something like miniaturized rice grains. It’s mixed with beans, corn, walnuts, and feta cheese then seasoned with a light lemon dill dressing. You eat it as is then spread the tuna on the bagel chips. I think I can have this for lunch although it’s marketed as a snack.
The second snack box is Cold Pasta, Chorizo Cheese Spread with Crostini (P150, pictured above). The pasta is cooked in olive oil and herbs. The spread is really savory so it complements the mild-tasting pasta nicely.
There are two new cookies in the roster too, starting with Dark Chocolate Macadamia Cookie (P65, pictured above). It’s really chewy and it’s got dark gooey Belgian chocolate so it’s rich without being overly sweet. I liked it a lot.
Instead of the usual oatmeal cookie, Starbucks now has Old-fashioned Oatmeal Cookie with Blueberries (P65, pictured above). Each one is packed with oats, roasted walnuts, and blueberries. It’s also chewy but I was surprised at how sweet it was. Yes, it’s actually sweeter than the Dark Chocolate Macadamia Cookie.
Starbucks goes back to the basics with this New York Cheesecake (P120 per slice / P1,250 whole, pictured above). You can opt to have it plain or topped with mocha, caramel, or strawberry. It’s good old classic creamy cheesecake with a graham crust.
Then there’s Classic Chocolate Cake (P110 per slice / P990 whole, pictured above). Buttery caramel fudge is sandwiched between layers of dark chocolate cake and then coated with chocolate ganache. I’m pretty sure my chocoholic daughter will love this.
I got to try two new drinks too: Chestnut Macchiato (P135 short / P145 tall / P160 grande / P170 venti, pictured above left) and Asian Dolce Frappuccino Blended Beverage (P145 tall / P155 grande / P165 venti, pictured above right). I really liked the piping hot Chestnut Macchiato. It smelled of roasted chestnuts and it wasn’t overly sweet. Asian Dolce Frappuccino was too sweet for me. Starbucks is also bringing back a drink from 2013 — Asian Dolce Latte (P115 short / P125 tall / P140 grande / P150 venti, not pictured).
To commemorate the upcoming Chinese New Year, there’s also the Starbucks Bearista in a horse costume since it’s going to be the year of the horse. It even has the chinese character for horse, 馬 (mǎ), emblazoned on its costume.
How do you find Starbucks latest food offerings? Personally I’m glad there are now more healthy low-calorie options as I still need to lose 10-15 lbs! 😀
NOTE: The Perfect Oatmeal is available at ALL Starbucks stores nationwide but the Couscous and Cold Pasta are available at Metro Manila stores only.
