First of all I’d like to clarify that I am in no way connected to Cradle Magazine or October Eighty Publications. Yes, I contributed a total of three articles to them which were published in two issues, but any relationship we had soured when they failed to pay the agreed fee. In the end, someone else settled the score more than one year after. While they technically do not owe me anything at present, I absolutely refuse to be associated with them in any way.

I received an email from a fellow mom who happens to be one of my readers. She was concerned about a photo contest which Cradle Magazine has been mass-mailing people about. The contest requires people to deposit a P250 registration fee to Cradle Magazine’s bank account in order to join. She was wondering why she needed to pay, whereas photo contests in other parenting magazines normally require no fees to join.
I am not telling you not to join the said contest. It’s really up to you. If you feel that the prize is worth investing P250 for, then by all means go for it. Hopefully they’ll see it through the end. Given my less-than-ideal history with Cradle Magazine and October Eighty Publications, I can’t help but be skeptical. Before they could not even manage to publish the magazine on a regular basis. I don’t know now, since I don’t really keep tabs on them.
This is actually not the first time that I encountered a pay-to-participate photo contest. A certain magazine required people to buy voting “tickets” found in their issues in order to vote for the contestants some time ago. That magazine is no longer in publication though.
