I attended a make-up workshop conducted by renowned make-up artist Blair Patterson, Estee Lauder’s Global Artistry Director. It was held at the EDSA Shangri-la Hotel last October 13, 2012.
Blair started by applying foundation. He suggests applying Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex (their most advanced anti-aging serum) beforehand so that the skin would be primed and well-moisturized. This would make everything that follows go on smoother. He showed us what he called the “Foundation Flower”, meaning you start from the middle of the face when applying foundation working outwards as if you’re drawing flower petals.
After priming the skin and applying foundation, Blair did a bit of contouring. He used a foundation a couple of shades darker than the model’s skin and did a bit of contouring on the cheeks. He actually let us choose what make-up look we wanted to see — day, night, or the upcoming spring trend. Of course we picked the upcoming spring trend. 😀
The look consists of clean skin and shimmering eyes and so Blair worked on the eyes next. He used a bit of concealer and Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Eye Pencil to prime the lids. He rubbed the tip of the pencil at the back of his palm and used a brush to apply it onto the lids. It yielded a smokey look without eye shadow. Blair said that using this method, you can simply pat on eye shadow without blending and create a neat yet dramatic look.
So that was what he did, he simply patted on some shimmery eye shadow onto the model’s lids.
After applying eye shadow, he lined the upper lids with eyeliner. Blair says that putting on dark eyeliner close to the upper lash line gives the illusion of darker and thicker lashes. He finished off the eye make-up with mascara. He said that you can curl your lashes without using eyelash curler simply by holding up the mascara wand under the base of the lashes for a few seconds to give it some lift. Then you continue on to the tips wiggling the wand slightly back and forth from left to right.
Blair then put on a bit of blush on the apples of the cheeks. You will have to smile to find the apples of your cheeks.
Fresh, natural, and yet dramatic, don’t you think? The make-up demo was done in less than an hour. Blair is used to working under time pressure especially during Fashion Week and so he can create a variety of looks rather quickly.
A lot of people actually stuck around since Blair was very accommodating, answering make-up questions from just about everyone who would approach him. Although I would have loved to chat some more, I had to go because I had a dinner scheduled with friends that night.
Thank you Estee Lauder Philippines for the chance to learn from one of the best in the industry! 😀
